I was talking to my mother-in-law this afternoon, and saying that its sometimes difficult to explain who I am and how I think to people from "my tribe" - by which I mean the evangelical Christian world I grew up in and around. I never really fit in this "tribe" completely anyway - I'm far too much of a boundary-pusher, and grew up with parents who were as well, but in the last five years I've become further and further removed from it!
Anyways, my mother-in-law said, "I know what you are - you're a Been-to". I asked for clarification - I wasn't sure what this meant, but she said, "A Been-to is a person in Nigeria who grew up in Nigeria, but has 'been-to' somewhere else (usually Europe or North America). They come back to Africa, but they're never really the same - part of them is always different. And even though they grew up in their tribe, and know how the tribe works, they don't always do what you'd expect them to do. They are different. They are a Been-to."
I just loved the description!
